Wood varnishing
Clear protective finishes over bare or stained wood on doors, rails, treads and woodwork.
Varnish is the clear coat that protects wood and gives it its sheen. Over stain it is what takes the wear. We sand between coats for a smooth build and pick the product for the job: interior or exterior, amber or water-clear, satin or gloss.
Varnish, polyurethane or oil?
Oil-based finishes warm the wood with an amber tone. Water-based finishes stay clear and dry fast. Spar varnish is made for exterior wood that moves with the weather.
Refresh or strip?
If the finish is worn but intact, a scuff sand and fresh coats bring it back. If it is peeling or gray, it gets stripped to bare wood first.
Exterior wood in the sun
UV breaks clear finishes down fastest. Doors and gates facing south or west need recoating more often, and we will tell you when.
